The da Vinci system is an advanced solution to traditional laparoscopic surgery. With the laparoscopic approach, rather than creating a large open incision, the surgeon makes several small incisions near the targeted area. He then inserts rigid instruments into these incisions, with which he performs the operation. The instruments he inserts include an endoscopic camera that projects a view of the surgical area to a monitor that he uses to track the surgical instruments, which respond to his hand movements.
When using the da Vinci system, the surgeon makes similar small incisions and inserts 3-4 robotic arms and an endoscope, or camera, into the surgical site. The robotic arms are very responsive to the surgeon’s hand, wrist, and finger movements. The camera provides a high-definition, 3D, real time image of the instruments inside the patient’s body. Every maneuver is under direct control of the surgeon who remains in the operating room, close to the patient and his surgical support staff.
The da Vinci instruments bend and rotate much further than traditional laparoscopic instruments. They also have more range of motion and flexibility than the human hand. This enables Dr. Antonini greater precision and range when completing complex surgeries. The high definition camera provides a much more realistic view of the surgical site.
Other advantages of the da Vinci system include:
Robotic-assisted surgery via the da Vinci system has undergone numerous clinical trials and more than 10,000 peer-reviewed studies regarding use of the system for various procedures. It’s an effective and safe procedure that’s often preferred by surgeons due to its precision and benefits to patients, including faster recovery and quicker return to normal daily life.
The da Vinci surgical method is not the most effective treatment for every circumstance, but Dr. Antonini has performed more than 500 robotic-assisted surgeries and is an expert in the field. He will carefully review your case before making recommendations about robotic-assisted versus traditional open surgical intervention. Dr. Antonini also takes time to thoroughly review and discuss his recommendations with his patients before scheduling any surgery.
